Manufacturers produce Moisture Resistant MDF, or MR MDF for short, using the same methods as its Standard MDF counterpart. The crucial difference in the process being the use of a moisture resistant binding agent and a much higher-pressure pressing process.
Because it is resistance to moisture, you can use it in bathrooms and kitchens and other areas or rooms prone to humidity. The same quality also makes it easier to paint as it reduces the effort needed to get a good finish on the edges.
The increased density of moisture resistant MDF also provides a better finish when machining in the face, especially if the finished product is to be painted. A good example of this would be Dado rail or skirting boards.

Q. What is Moisture Resistant MDF?
Moisture Resistant MDF, also known as MR MDF, is an MDF board that has been developed for indoor areas with moisture and high humidity. It uses the same basic production methods as Standard MDF however: the process involves greater compression of the fibres and uses resins that are resistant to moisture as the bonding agent.
Q. Why is Moisture Resistant MDF Green?
The green colouring comes from the addition of a dye that is added during the production process. The only purpose of the dye is to distinguish it from other MDF products, Fire Rated (red), & Standard MDF (un-dyed) for example, and is especially useful for stock control.
The depth of colour, and that certain MR MDF products have a green dyed core between two layers of brown, bears no relation to its performance in humid environments.
Q. Where should this board be used?
Use this board in higher moisture-prone areas such as kitchens, utility rooms, and bathrooms.
It’s also the product of choice for MDF skirting boards, especially because of their proximity to hard floor surfaces (areas of mopping) and exposed brickwork in older houses.
Although MR MDF is resistant to moisture, we would, however, strongly advise that the product is at least primed on the non-visible edges and sides for added protection.
Q. Is Moisture Resistant MDF Waterproof?
It’s important to note that moisture resistant MDF is not waterproof and, therefore, not suitable for use outside. If you need an MDF for outdoor projects, or areas that regularly come into contact with water, we would recommend MEDITE Tricoya Extreme.
Q. Is MR MDF good for DIY projects?
We highly recommend moisture resistant MDF for DIY projects, particularly projects that you intend to paint. Compared to Standard MDF, MR MDF is less prone to fibre lift on its edges. This results in less sanding and preparation to get a good finish on exposed edges.
