An Introduction to B/BB Birch Plywood?

B/BB Birch Plywood is an exceptionally high-grade, Birch throughout, Plywood board. It features a near perfect (B Grade) veneer on the face with a lower grade (BB Grade) veneer on the reverse. This makes it the ideal choice for Birch Plywood furniture and other projects requiring a high-quality finish to one side. Good examples of this would be Birch Plywood Kitchens, built in shelving/display units and decorative Plywood wall panelling.

This board’s popularity is down to its rigidity, versatility and natural beauty and, of course, the quality of its face. Additionally, the light tones of its natural wood surface and stunning end grain detail ensure it stands out from other panel products.

FAQs

B/BB Birch Plywood is the highest grade of Birch Plywood. It is a wood sheet produced from thin layers (Plies) peeled from for Birch trees. The individual layers are then bonded with the grain running in opposite directions. This improves stability and strength. The inner layers are made from lower grade plies that are filled to repair imperfections (knot holes etc) and to reduce visible holes on cut edges. The outer layers (veneers) are selected for their quality and appearance. The highest quality is used on the face (B grade) with a slightly lower quality on the reverse (BB grade).

Quality! The “B” in B/BB provides a superior face compared to its BB reverse. The B side is consistently better as it has smaller, smoother knots, lower natural discolouration and no plug repairs to knots. The BB side allows for larger knots, a greater degree of natural discolouration and a limited number of plug repairs to open knots. BB/BB grade Birch Plywood is the same both sides (larger knots, more discoloration and plug repairs).

Quality! The clearer veneers used in the B grade face are more difficult to come by and are, therefore, charged at a premium.
