Why paint or finish MDF?
The primary reason for painting MDF is that it is not a finished product and is not intended to be left in an unfinished state.
Secondly, MDF panel products are quite porous, so a couple of coats of primer and a coat or two of your preferred top coat will help protect against the ingress of moisture.
The third and main reason is that it allows you to finish your project in a colour of your choice to suit your desired scheme.
Painting different types of MDF (the Pros & Cons)
Lightweight MDF

Whilst its reduced weight makes it easier to cut and handle, the reduction in density will mean more sanding, more coats of primer and paint and more effort to get a good finish on the edges.
The application of a paintable edging tape will overcome the edge painting issue; however, the low density makes the board more susceptible to dinks and dents compared to higher-density MDF panel products.
Lightweight MDF is a popular choice for shop fitting and exhibition companies as it reduces the weight of pre-assembled units for transporting.
Standard MDF
Standard MDF has a standard density and no additives to enhance its performance. The “standard” prefix helps to distinguish it from other products in the MDF family.
It is easier to paint than lightweight MDF; however, the edges can still present a problem. Traditionally, an MDF or sanding sealer would be used to seal the edges; nowadays, paintable edging is the easier option.
Standard MDF will, with a little time and effort, provide a great finish for most commercial or domestic interior applications.
Moisture-resistant MDF (recommended)

MR MDF is produced using a moisture-resistant bonding agent which allows it to be used in areas exposed to humidity, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and changing rooms. Its moisture-resistant qualities also give it an advantage when painting.
Finsa Hidrofugo is recognised as the best MR MDF board for painting, as its unique steam injection production process significantly increases the density throughout the thickness of the board.
Hidrofugo’s density and moisture-resistant qualities significantly reduce the amount of fibre lift and therefore the amount of sanding time required on the edges.
The performance of this board is so impressive that we use it for all our decorative wall panels and painted panel projects. We’d have no hesitation in recommending it for any interior painted MDF project.
Factory-primed MDF
Factory-primed MDF is a pre-primed, moisture-resistant MDF board that arrives from the factory with a single coat of primer on both sides.
If the panels are only seen from the front or back, the pre-primed faces will save a bit of time. Unfortunately, the pre-priming does nothing to resolve the painted edge issues.
Fire-rated MDF

Architects usually specify this type of MDF for commercial or residential projects where fire safety is a concern and a condition of the planning regulations.
To paint fire-rated MDF, it is essential that each product used is certified to the same spec as the board, Class B, or higher, to maintain its fire resistance and rating.
Tricoya Extreme MDF
Tricoya Extreme is the UK’s only 100% waterproof MDF product designed specifically for use outdoors.
Untreated, this product will last for 25 years below ground and 50 years for aboveground use. That said, it is likely that you will want to paint it. If so, we would recommend using a good-quality, multilayered paint system not to protect the board but to ensure the longevity of the paint finish.
DIY Painting and Finishing Guide
Here’s our step-by-step recipe for how to paint MDF like a pro:
Step1 – Choose a good-quality moisture-resistant MDF board. We would recommend Finsa Hidrofugo.
Step 2 – Sand the edges smooth using a 240-grit sandpaper.
Step 3 – Dust off the edges and faces, then apply a good quality water-based primer such as Dulux Quick Drying Primer Undercoat to the entire panel or unit. Please note that if you are using an emulsion, you will not need to use a primer.
Step 4 – Once the primer has dried, lightly de-nib the faces and sand the edges smooth using a 240 or 320 grit sandpaper.
Step 5 – Repeat steps 3 and 4.
Step 6 – Your panels should now be ready for their first topcoat.
Step 7– Once the topcoat has dried, lightly de-nib the faces and sand the edges smooth using a 320-grit sandpaper.
Step 8 – Dust off, or wipe with a slightly damp cloth, allowing time to dry before applying the final coat.
Top tips for a Great Finish.
- Use the correct grade of MDF – Moisture-resistant MDF should be used.
- Preparation is key – Sand before each coat of paint/primer.
- Choose a good primer – Dulux quick-drying primer undercoat is great.
- Do not over- or underapply the paint – Causes drips, runs or visible brush strokes.
How can CNC Creations help?
If you want the best possible finish, there are a couple of options we can provide that will help you to achieve your goal.
Cut to size and primed
We provide an online ordering service that allows you to enter your panel dimensions and then select the option to have the panels primed.
This service is great for individual panels or self- assembly projects that, once assembled, will be ready for you to paint.
The benefits of this service include:
- Clean, accurate cuts.
- High-quality pre-primed boards.
- Reduced preparation time.
- Reduced mess.
- A better end result.
We use an exceptionally high-quality primer that is applied in two coats, with the boards being sanded prior to each coat. All that is needed prior to top coating is a light sanding with 320-grit sandpaper.
